Once children start to go to school, schools influence them on their intellectual and social development more than parents.
To what extend do you agree or disagree?
Although schools influence on school goers is widely accepted, the extend of this influence is not an agreed-upon subject. I would argue that despite schools’ undeniable effects on children, the main influencers are still their parents.
Nowadays, a child would normally spend more time in school than home. Since in most households both parents are active members of the work force, daycare centers and schools tend to keep their children for longer hours. An average child may spend more than eight hours in school. Spending long hours means higher impact on the child’s mind, both in term of social and also intellectual development. Having an authority figure, teachers tend to be role models for many youngsters. In the past, a child’s friends were usually same age family members or neighbors; however, introduction of new communication technologies and social media allows children to befriend their classmates, even if their homes are far apart. In short, the effect of school environment on a child growth is undeniable.
On the contrary, parents have much more interest in their children’s lives. They care and worry about their children’s well being much deeper than any school employee. Moreover, a teacher’s attention is distributed among multiple pupils and he or she cannot possibly show as much as attention as a parent would. Furthermore, it is culturally and legally the parents responsibility to ensure their children well being. All these reasons also make children more accepting of their parents advice and actions rather than their friends or teachers. Many of children may have multiple teachers along the years, but their parents are fixed. This stability of parents also play a key role in their superior position in their children’s lives.
In conclusion, although no one can ignore the vast effect of schools on children’s mental and social development, I strongly believe that parents still play the key role in this matter.
As a result, I think that juries should consider dimension of guilt to issue the sentences and attempt to substitute new and more humanitarian way to compensate the criminals as far as possible.
